- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024The first edition was amazing and this second brings it to the new era. It’s very approachable and written so beginners and professionals can gain insight. Perfect thing to start your DJ journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024Phil Morse and his Digital DJ Tips team do a great job with all their classes, videos and this book. I was a vinyl DJ for many years making the transition to digital, and the team has been a godsend. About half of this book is directed towards beginners, but there are some gems in there for more advanced DJs. Perhaps just things you never thought of if you’re not around other DJs much. Definitely check out their YouTube videos and online classes. I am currently enrolled in the scratch class, and it’s wonderful. Shout out to Steve.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024Any aspiring Dj will appreciate this book as well older people like myself who are going back to djing.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024My goodness. I thought this book wouldn't be very good. I was wrong, it's EXCEPTIONAL.
I didn't think it would have much information - there are so many kinds of DJs depending on if you're a club DJ or wedding DJ etc... and a million genres of music from classic 50's rock hits to current day EDM. How could one possibly write a single book covering all of these situations? What could you ever say?
Well, I'm ashamed to admit that as much as I've DJed, I never considered how obvious it is that 90% of DJing is similar across the board - but even that 10% difference (where you're playing and what kind of music you're playing) there are still universal ideas and rules (both to follow and to understand well enough to break intelligently) that of COURSE you can write one book about it all!
It's even more easy to see when you see how clearly the book is written. When the author is this good at explaining complex subjects so simply and clearly - you know right away that even though the book isn't physically thick, it's not thousands of pages - you'll know right away that all the info will be there because it's so clear and simply written that it's easy to fit it all.
Now, as someone who still has my Tech 12's and vinyl record collection, I TOTALLY get why this book focuses mostly on the digital side of things. Though vinyl DJs could still get quality info from this book if they are beginners since there is so much universal information here.
But yes, when it comes to the digital era, there is a LOT more to navigate and the ease and speed at which you can build a digital library of music means you can start to drown in content and this book does an AMAZING job helping you with that. I read and re-read those chapters about how to find, keep and SORT music. My gosh, my second reading I was highlighting so much stuff. It helped me GREATLY.
There is a whole section on the actual mechanics of how to operate the physical electronics used to do the DJing (decks, mixers, controllers, stand-alones, etc). But really, that is dwarfed by the amount of info you get on universal ideas and solutions on how to find music, how to organize it (no matter the software you use, no matter what kind of music you have), how to decide which of the GAZZILION tracks you have to bring with you to your gig, and ideas on what to play and when (and again this actually applies to ALL genres of music and ALL types of events - something I never realized was similar across all DJs!!!)
It's so good. So good. And really, this author puts out so much free content already on YouTube that if you can support him financially with the purchase of the book - you're investing in a WONDERFUL educational tool and supporting a wonderful educator.
You'll see I don't have a "verified purchase" next to my review. That is because I got the book directly through the website. I play 99% Drum and Bass with a little rap mixed in once in a while. And I gained a lot of great info from this book. Completely recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024I really like that everything is covered from personal experiences but the modern references make it easy to recommend. Especially how music streaming and live streaming are both covered.
The biggest challenge with other older DJ books is while much of the content is great, the reference to DJ technology and relevant issues are not up to date. This is what makes this second edition so good because it makes sense for today’s DJs.
“Shiny New Gear Syndrome” is a real thing amongst both beginner as well as experienced DJs.
Also really appreciate the lesson about how to get on the festival stage, which is to make music. It's something I see folks always try to shortcut and not do the music production part of it.
The playlist pyramid really covers an efficient way to think about your music. The mixing transitions reference video demonstrations on the website. And it covers the different approaches between a mobile, bar, or club gig.
A must read for any DJ, new or experienced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for every level of DJ
Should you buy this book? Absolutely!
14 years ago I made a jump into the dj world aged 59. Having Learnt to ballroom dance, I hated the dismal rehashed versions of great tunes used in the name of tempo and an easy to follow beat.
My head said ‘ I can do better than that and, with a bit of tweaking, use the originals’. I knew what I wanted to achieve but had no idea of how to do it. After much wasted time and cash trying to run my dream ‘disco meets ballroom’ events in the style of Strictly Come Dancing (UK)/Dancing With The Stars (US), I began to get it right. It evolved to add in DJing at weddings, birthdays and corporate events - winging it as I went along.
It wasn’t until I discovered Phil’s Digital DJ Tips and first edition of this book that it all fell into place. If only I’d found it earlier!
It had advice & guidance in bucket loads plus, importantly, the inspiration to believe I really could achieve the success I desired, whatever level that may be.
I was living the dream - and getting paid for it! I was performing at amazing events is prestigious venues all over the country.
Then Covid pulled the plug as swiftly as an over sensitive noise limiter and I haven’t worked since.
I miss the buzz enormously but, at 73, my appetite for rolling in at 4am after a a 12 hour stint as MC & DJ at a wedding has gone. I would relish the possibility of doing a few easier, more local events at some point though.
The DJ world has changed significantly in the last 5 years. So when I saw the 2nd edition of Rock The Dance Floor was released I had to read it.
It didn’t disappoint! Even more and updated help in an easy to follow format to help you get started then turn from amateur to pro. It’s rekindled my desire to get back to performing in some way.
For me there’s a But, and it’s a big But...
I’ve successfully convinced my wife once to do this despite her scepticism. The question is, can I do it a second time?.......

5.0 out of 5 stars The all you need to know DJ book from the master teacher of the biggest DJ-school in the world
Great for starters in the wonderful world of DJ-ing as well as for experienced DJ's. I't way more then an instructional book, it's the DJ bible you never realised you missed until you own it.
